In today’s highly regulated shipping industry, Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Condition Surveys play a critical role in risk management and loss prevention. These inspections, conducted on behalf of marine liability insurers (P&I Clubs), focus on identifying potential risks that could lead to insurance claims, financial losses, or operational disruptions.

Unlike statutory class or flag state surveys, P&I Condition Surveys specifically evaluate third-party liability risks and ensure full compliance with relevant standards. This includes assessing physical condition, hatch cover weathertightness, crew safety, and pollution prevention measures.

With over 4,000 successful operations across six continents and a 97.7% client retention rate, Nordic Maritime Solutions is the trusted partner for insurance firms, P&I Clubs, EPC contractors, OEMs, wind park operators, Oil and Gas exploration and production, and global shipping companies.

What Is a P&I Condition Survey?

A P&I Condition Survey is an independent inspection conducted at the request of a P&I Club or marine insurer to assess a vessel’s structural condition, safety equipment, operational practices, and compliance with risk management standards, as detailed in their guidance notes.

These surveys, including any necessary follow-up survey, ensure that shipowners, charterers, and insurers meet all survey requirements and the highest safety and liability protection measures.

📌 P&I Condition Surveys help prevent costly claims by identifying and addressing potential hazards before they lead to accidents or insurance disputes.

Key Elements of a P&I Condition Survey

  • Hull & Structural Integrity Assessment: Checking for corrosion, hull damage, and overall seaworthiness.
  • Weathertight Hatch Cover Testing (Ultra Sonic Testing): Ensuring hatch covers are properly sealed to prevent cargo damage.
  • Safety Equipment & Crew Competency Review: Inspecting firefighting systems, lifeboats, life rafts, and emergency response procedures.
  • Pollution Prevention & MARPOL Compliance: Verifying proper waste management, oil spill prevention, and ballast water management.
  • ISM Code & Safety Management System Audit: Ensuring vessel operations align with SOLAS, ISM Code, and classification society standards.
  • Bunker Survey & Fuel Quantity Verification: Accurately measuring fuel and lubricant levels to prevent disputes.

📌 These inspections serve as a proactive risk management tool for shipowners, insurers, and P&I Clubs, reducing liability exposure and improving vessel safety.

It is our mission to help you succeed with your projects

When Are P&I Condition Surveys Conducted?

P&I Condition Surveys are conducted under various circumstances to assess vessel risk, ensure compliance, and prevent claims, providing technical support to all parties involved.

1. Pre-Entry (New Entry) Surveys for Insurance Coverage

  • Required before a vessel is accepted into a P&I Club, especially for ships over 10–12 years old.
  • Confirms that the vessel meets P&I Club risk criteria for safe operation.

2. Periodic Surveys for Ongoing Risk Monitoring

  • Many P&I Clubs conduct routine surveys every 3–5 years to verify that insured vessels maintain acceptable safety standards.
  • Older ships or those operating in higher-risk trades may undergo annual or biennial inspections.

3. Post-Casualty or Incident Investigations

  • Conducted after major claims, vessel detentions, or port state control (PSC) inspections.
  • Determines root causes of damage or deficiencies and ensures corrective actions.

4. Following Port State Control (PSC) Detentions

  • If a vessel is detained due to safety deficiencies, P&I Clubs may require an additional condition survey before continuing coverage.

5. Reactivation Surveys After Lay-Up

  • Ensures that vessels returning to service after lay-up are seaworthy, compliant, and safe for operations.

📌 P&I Clubs reserve the right to conduct surveys at any time to ensure vessel safety, loss prevention, and continued insurance eligibility.

Why Are P&I Condition Surveys Essential?

1. Preventing Costly Insurance Claims & Legal Disputes

  • We assist shipowners to avoid expensive claims related to cargo damage, crew injuries, and pollution incidents, and many other negative outcomes.
  • Supports P&I insurance coverage eligibility by demonstrating proactive risk management.

2. Ensuring Compliance with Insurance & Regulatory Standards

  • Aligns with global safety regulations, including:
SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea)
IMO Cargo Stowage & Securing Code
     MARPOL Pollution Prevention Requirements
P&I Club & Marine Insurance Policies

3. Reducing Risk Exposure for Shipowners & Insurers

  • Identifies hidden vulnerabilities that could lead to vessel detentions, cargo damage claims, or operational delays.
  • Provides detailed recommendations for corrective actions to ensure compliance with industry best practices.

4. Weathertight Hatch Cover Testing to Prevent Cargo Claims

  • Ultra Sonic Hatch Cover Testing (UST) is a core part of P&I Condition Surveys, as hatch leaks are one of the leading causes of cargo claims.
  • By detecting even the smallest weathertightness failures on vessels presented for inspection, we ensure cargo integrity and liability protection.

📌 By addressing deficiencies early, shipowners can improve safety records, lower insurance premiums, and maintain strong commercial reputations.
